yes i know it has been too long!! but the writer's block has been severe. So i decided to just go with an easy topic for me to talk about...baseball. And more specifically Mets baseball.
Now a big deal is being made about the moves made so far this off season by my boys in queens. The yanks made a bit of a splash by trading for curtis granderson. The phils are about to get Halladay. And the mets...eh, not much doing besides offers to Bengie Molina and Jason Bay. And there's alot of people upset about this. Personally, I think there are moves the Mets can make that will improve on the disaster that was this past season. And without breaking the bank or giving up a ton of prospect.
First off Jason Bay will be a great addition. He plays very good defense, and is a gap hitter. In case you hadn't noticed Citifield (hence forth called the new shea) has some huge gaps. And he puts up good numbers...29 doubles, 30 some odd homers, 119 RBI. I think getting him in a lineup with Wright, Beltran, Francour, and Reyes will do wonders for the run production. Then look at Molina....solid .270 hitter and a great defensive catcher. Now at 34 his age is a concern. But for a year or two til Thole is ready? not too shabby. Add Delgado for a year to be an elder statesman of sorts. My only deduction on would make? Find some sucker to take on castillo's idiotic contract and get an orlando hudson type player. Now unfortunately omar has not found that sucker yet. So here's my take on the mets lineup including both molina and bay:
1) Jose Reyes SS
2)Jeff Francour RF
3)Carlos Beltran CF
4)Jason Bay LF
5)David Wright 3B
6)Bengie Molina C/Carlos Delgado 1B
7)Daniel Murphy 1B/Bengie Molina C
8)Luis Castillo 2B
And remember you have Angel Pagan, possibly Fernando Martinez and Santos all coming off the bench, all good players.
Now the pitching...oy vey!! Well there's Johan, always a good sign. Now alot is going to depend on the health of john maine. if he can be healthy, he's becoming a solid pitcher. then there is Mke Pelfrey who has improved. now unfortunately his record doesn't show it at 10-12, but he pitched 184 innings, more then any starter. Now i think it is time for the ollie perez experiment to end. when he's on he's lights out, but more often then not he's not on, and you can't risk not knowing what you're going to get every 5th game. So what do we now that Lackey and Halladay are off the market? of the "second tier" starters i say get Pinero and Marquis. Pinero was 15-12and pitched 214 innings to go with a 3.40 ERA. Marquis put up similar numbers...15-13, ERA around 4, 216 innings. and these guys have done this their entire careers. Marquis is only 30, as is Pinero. So why not give these guys a 3 or 4 year deal?Neither has had major injury issues that has caused them to miss significant time.
Now the pen is a bit trickier...its a bit dry in the reliever market. Personally I think at age what, 36 Fernando Rodney is not a smart move as a set up guy for K-Rod. The main problem with the pen has been guys have not been given solid roles...as in ok you pitch the 6th, you pitch, your my lefty guy, you're the setup guy. When these roles have been defined, the pen has done extremely well, as it did in the first 3 months of last season before the injuries decimated the entire team.
as for the current crop besides k-rod, i say you have to keep Feliciano and Bobby Parnell, who at 24 has great upside as a 6th/7th inning guy. other then that, unfortunately fellow mets fans i am at a loss!
So the Mets are fixable. I think the most important thing besides these moves....getting a new medical staff. Before they were absolutely killed with injuries they were 30-20 and in first place. There is no way they should have had minor injuries become such major issues. So you spend money on all these players, spend it on some new team docs and trainers!! I think the Mets will contend. They may not win the East but they will definitely be in that wild card race and have a good chance at taking it. So if a
